At Digicel we want you to get the most from your data plan - here are our top tips to help you stay connected & in control.
[1] Video and voice calls on WhatsApp & Facebook are data-intensive
Calls made over WhatsApp, Facebook or similar applications use a lot of data, compared to a standard phone call. For more information on data usage & examples of typical consumption rates, click here.
[2] Close Background Apps
Applications such as Instagram, Facebook & YouTube use background data. Click herefor instructions on how to disable background data. It's also a good idea to uninstall any applications you are no longer using; this will also help with storage & battery life.
[3] Remember: Video and Music Streaming Apps Use More Data Than Other Apps
Streaming music & videos on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook consume a lot of data. Typical data usage rates for Music and Video are available here.
Downloading content over Wi-Fi and listening or viewing content offline is one way to minimize data usage with these applications. Check out D'Music which offers the ability to download and listen even when you're offline!
[4] Turn off notifications for Apps you're not using
Your smartphone uses data for push notifications and updates. You can reduce this data usage by disabling notifications. This option can be changed in the 'Settings' section of your device & guess what? You can choose which Apps you want/don't want notifications for.
[5] Use MyDigicel & set limits to control your data usage
Use the MyDigicel app to better manage your data. Click here to learn how. You can also set data limits & track usage on your phone in 'settings'. See steps here.
[6] Switch Off Default Settings such as auto-play on Apps and Devices
Apps like Facebook, WhatsApp & Instagram use data by automatically playing videos that appear in your feed. To use less data, you can turn off the auto-playing option of videos on social media platforms by selecting the App then 'settings' then 'data usage'. Similarly, for email accounts you do not use very often, turn off notifications as your phone uses data to synchronize and notify you of new emails on an ongoing basis unless you change the setting.
[7] Use Wi-Fi To Download/Update Apps & Large Files
Updating and downloading Apps increase data usage. You can change how your device handles updates in Settings by selecting "confirm updates" and changing this to "update over WiFi only".
[8] Turn Off Mobile Data When Sleeping. Use Wi-Fi Whenever Possible
Although you may not be on your phone, there are still data activities such as application updates or incoming notifications. To save on your data, turn off mobile data and connect to Wi-Fi (where possible) when asleep. Remember you can switch back to using mobile data at any time.
[9] Save Data - Turn Off Maps, Navigation & Location-Based Services
Even when Apps are not in use, location services use sources like Wi-Fi and mobile networks to give location information faster and more accurately. To avoid unnecessary data charges, switch off location services in your settings.
[10] Make sure you have the right plan
Consider upgrading your data plan if you frequently go over your data allowance. View all our plans here.
